Lepidoptera of Great Smoky Mountains National Park
The GSMNP includes more than 0.5M acres and is one of the largest national parks in the United States. It includes a remarkable diversity of habitats from lowlands to montane peaks. It is home to the first All Taxa Biological Inventory (ATBI) initiated in any national park, an effort being organized by Discover Life in America (www.discoverlifeinamerica.org). David Wagner and Brian Scholtens initiated an effort to inventory the lepidopteran fauna of the Park in 2001. Their plans have gained support from many of North America’s leading lepidopterists who have convened at the GSMNP each year for a 3-4 day bout of collecting each year. These Bio-Blitzes have raised the count of lepidopteran species known from the Park to 1635 species. In 2004, work was begun to gather DNA barcodes for all GSMNP lepidopterans. As a consequence, barcode records are now available for 60% of the fauna.
