The family Saturniidae
Members of the family Saturniidae are insects that impress. Some species are goliaths – the largest insects on the planet. Other are exquisite; from the diaphanous green of Actias, to the rich chestnut hues of Citheronia. The global saturniid fauna includes about 1800 species that have been assigned to 9 subfamilies. Their diversity varies radically among regions. With a fauna of just 9 species, Australia is nearly saturniid-free. By contrast, South America is awash in saturniids – there are at least 1000 species.
A barcode survey of the global saturniid fauna will be challenging because there is no modern published Checklist for the global fauna. Fortunately, certain regions with a diverse fauna, such as the Neotropics, have been the target of recent analysis, but the African and Asian faunas are much less known.
