North American Checklist

Background

This page provides access to a Checklist for the 12,423 lepidopteran species known to occur in North America. These species include representatives of 82 different families. The Checklist for North American Lepidoptera, assembled by Hodges (1983), provided the foundation for the present list. Because this publication was based on a survey of the scientific literature up to 1978, it is now substantially out of date. The present list includes updates to the ‘Hodges checklist’ that have been curated by Jean-François Landry, Don Lafontaine and Jim Troubridge on behalf of the North American lepidopteran community.
